Following the initial formation of Lethal Mercenaries for its then one-off performance in late 2013 in Sydney and the release in 2020 of the first edition of the band’s “Foreign Insurgence” album, Hong Kong born/Melbourne bred/Sydney-based musician (and former contributor to i94Bar.com) - Simon Li, under the alias ‘Charlie Lethal’ and Lethal Mercenaries offer their follow up album “Insurgent Retribution” which continues to present both their kind of punk/hard rock/garage rock and a dark, harsh perspective of the realities of past and present times.

Making up the ranks of Lethal Mercenaries on “Insurgent Retribution” are recently recruited six string insurgents and contributors of lead guitar - ‘Atom Bomb Al’ and ‘The Grand Bazooka’ (both veterans from numerous Sydney underground garage rock bands since the 1980's); alongside another lead guitar contributor (and returning six string insurgent) ‘Slash and Burn Steve’ and ‘Charlie Lethal’ on vocals/drums/guitar/bass/organ.

“Insurgent Retribution” comprises nine original songs and includes ‘No Rules’ a song which features Charlie Lethal offering vocals in Cantonese (the predominant language of his birthplace Hong Kong). “Insurgent Retribution” was recorded between late 2021 and late 2022 at various studios/locations including Simon’s 116 Studios.

Lethal Mercenaries is a one man operation courtesy of Simon Li. This has been one of my favourite new
discovery's in recent times. This LP is like Hubert Selby Jr novel set to music. Not exactly pretty in nature, and like Selby deals with dark theme, but you do get the sense of hope as well. Track 7 No Rules is sung completely in Cantonese, a great touch. Reminds me a lot of Lou Reeds New York. Big thumps up
