Charlie Silky-Oak and The Maple Roses – Telling some tales via songs they sing
Led by “Charlie Silky-Oak” (an alias created by Simon Li {a Hong Kong born / Melbourne bred / Sydney-based folk meets country meets punk solo performer} as an alternate nom de plume to perform non-original material); the CDLP by Charlie Silky-Oak and The Maple Roses “Songs we sing, tales we tell” presents a different chapter in the recording career of Simon Li and examines key artists / bands whose music has shaped to varying degrees Simon’s previously released predominantly original material which culminated with “From Beth to Evie” CDLP in 2017 (which was recently updated and digitally re-released as “From Betty to Evie” via Simon’s bandcamp page (

The “Songs we sing, tales we tell” CDLP was recorded at various studios / locations including Simon’s 116 Studios and comprises eight songs where Charlie Silky-Oak and The Maple Roses (through a rotation of lead vocalists) offer their interpretations of compositions by songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt as well as songs previously interpreted by Audrey Auld and Sherry Rich & Courtesy Move.
Charlie Silky-Oak and The Maple Roses features Simon’s recent collaborators “Miss Rose” aka Heather Jones (ex-30 Frames a Second / Nude on the Moon / Nude Girls) [lead / backing vocals]; “Miss Maple” aka Sarah Solski (ex-Nude Girls) [lead vocals]; veteran collaborator “Gra Grey Ash” aka Graham Griffith (ex-Fifty Million Beers / Out of Nowhere / Hoola) [pedal steel guitar] and “Charlie Silky-Oak” aka Simon Li (ex-The Phringe Dwellers / Dave Favours & The Roadside Ashes / Balkan Grill / Lethal Mercenaries) [guitars / bass / drums / electronic organ / lead vocals / backing vocals].
